Manager
Institute for Watershed Studies
Joan manages the laboratories for the Institute, which
includes a water quality laboratory that uses conventional meters, wet
chemistry space, automated nutrient analyzers, and microscopes for plankton and
macroinvertebrate studies. The laboratory is a Washington Department of
Ecology accredited laboratory and operates using an approved Quality Assurance
Manual.
Biographical Information
Joan
received her BS in Environmental Science through the School of Public and
Environmental Affairs at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. After a
few years of environmental consulting in Louisiana, she continued her education
through Huxley College at Western Washington University.
After
receiving her MS from Western Washington University, she began working for the
Institute for Watershed Studies as a research technologist and lab
manager.

2005-2006
This
year we have 10 undergraduates and 2 graduate students working for IWS. We are continuing to monitor Lake
Whatcom and its tributaries and support various student and faculty research
projects by providing instrumentation and technical supervision. We are also identifying stream
macroinvertebrates from 3 local watersheds as part of the City of BellinghamÕs
resource management program.
