The Institute began monitoring Lake Samish in June 2005 to establish baseline water quality conditions. The project is supported in part by funding from the Samish Water District, and includes regular sampling at 2-4 sites in the lake.

Water samples are collected at four sites in Lake Samish, labeled A-D. A map of their locations is available here.

Site A is located in the north west end of the lake (west arm) is approximately 40 meters (120 feet) deep. Sites B and C are about 20 meters (60 feet) deep and are located in the east arm of the lake. Site D is located at the south east end of the lake (east arm) is only about 7 meters (21 feet) deep.
